House flies get their common name from being the most common fly found in and around homes and they do pose a significant health risk. These annoying flies have large red-brown compound eyes surrounded by a light gold stripe. House flies feed on animal waste, garbage, and all sorts of moist decaying matter such as spoiled fish, eggs and meat. Flies regurgitate and excrete wherever they come to rest and thereby mechanically transmit disease organisms. Flies are strongly suspected of transmitting at least 65 diseases to humans, including typhoid fever, dysentery, cholera, poliomyelitis, yaws, anthrax, tularemia, leprosy and tuberculosis.
Fleas are probably the most common domestic ectoparasite, feeding on any warm-blooded animal. Silverfish were given their name because their movement resembles a swimming fish. Three long, slender, antennal-like appendages emerging from the rear of their body which is covered with silvery scales.Humid environments within homes, garages and storage buildings with temperatures between 71 to 90 degrees F. are favored. Silverfish search from basement to the attic searching for food and will not leave and will not relocate until that source is exhausted. No health threats are associated with this pest.
Mites rarely transmit disease to humans, they adversely impact health in ways that range from simply being a nuisance when they enter homes in large numbers, to causing severe skin irritation that can cause intense itching.
